Mississippi Ridgeback Breed Standard
Breed History
The Mississippi Ridgeback is a small, short-haired breed originating the the central
flat-land regions of Saskabush. This breed contains the bloodlines of the Lithuanian
Cheese Hound, the Pitbull, the American Eskimo and Jack Russell Terrier with one small
pinch of Yoda for good measure. This breed was originally bred to hunt large game to
music while doing agility equipment with a large stuffed toy its in mouth while pulling a
skier behind. This versatile breed is excellent at multi-tasking when those tasks include
tearing open the garbage, chasing small animals and urinating on numerous objects of
value. This breed is extremely rare and on the brink of extinction. In fact, to date there is
only one known purebred Mississippi Ridgeback remaining - and he's a neutered male.
The hope of this breed lies in the hands of a few breed fanciers intent on spreading the
word about this fabulous and rare breed.

General Appearance

The majestic head is proudly carried on a well arched neck and the tail is set high and
curled over the loins. Elegant and graceful, the whole demeanor is one of poise and
inquiring alertness. The balanced structure and the smooth musculature enables it to
move with ease and agility.

Size, Proportion, Substance

Ideal height for is 15 5/8 inches exactly and weighing approximately 20 pounds give or
take 3 pounds depending on what tidbits this breed is able to scavenge from the garbage
or counter top.

Head

The head is proudly carried. The eyes are reminiscent of piglet eyes - somewhat beady
but very bright and intelligent. The rims of the eyes are pink with speckles. The ears are
large, erect and set on top of the head. When the Mississippi Ridgeback is intently
focused the ears will stand in a display of ears only second to Yoda himself. One ear
must not stand fully erect as per Breed Standard. The skull is flat, well chiseled and of
medium width, tapering toward the eyes. The foreface tapers from eye to muzzle with a
perceptible stop. The nose is an interesting brownish tint found in dogs of superior
breeding. The teeth are sharp and evenly aligned with a scissors bite.

Body

The Mississippi Ridgeback is well balanced with a short back, short coupled and ending
in a definite waist. Ribs moderately sprung and deep to elbows. This breed has a
relatively broad forechest that is necessary for emanating deep growls whilst tugging.
Chest of good width. Tail is set high on topline, and is carried over the back when this
breed demonstrates the "Mississippi Strut".

Forequarters

The legs are straight with clean fine bone, long forearm and well defined sinews. Pasterns
of good length, strong and flexible. The feet are small and compact with thick pads and
well arched toes. Dewclaws are present and used to dig into assailants or stuffies,
whichever poses the greatest threat at the time. Dewclaws are also expertly used as
'thumbs' when chowing down on Kongs or bones. Claws of formidable length and are
used in a cat-like fashion to scale most furniture or counter tops.

Hindquarters

Medium width, strong and muscular. Contain a secret spring-mechanism to assist in
jumping heights previously considered impossible for a dog of this stature. Excellent hind
end strength as this breed prefers to hoist its bum up onto bushes in order to defecate
rather than onto the ground like all other breeds. This behaviour has an evolutionary
function of communicating with other dogs. It indicates a much larger dog has marked the
bush, thus reinforcing the Mississippi Ridgeback's 'large dog' personality complex.

Coat and Color

Coat short and fine showing a slight trace of pig-like pink skin through the hair. Skin is
very soft and pliant. The colour is solid white aside from one faint "coffee stain" patch on
the back. The colour is very conducive to hiding on the snowy Saskabush plain in order
to ambush other creatures.

Gait

An elegant gait akin to greased lightening. The most efficient gait of this breed is one
where the feet do not touch the ground. This breed is known for travelling down stairs on
three legs. From time to time the Mississippi Ridgeback will perform the "Mississippi
Strut". With ears fully erect and tail curled over the back the Mississippi Ridgeback will
display his full plumage in a magnificent ridge of hackles from neck to tail. This is
generally accompanied by a gruff song and typically ends with the Mississippi Ridgeback
mounting the wrong end of another dog.

Disqualifying Faults

The only disqualifying faults to date are small, floppy ears or a quiet, docile, timid
demeanor. All other breed standard criteria are optional.

Temperament

An intelligent, alert, independent, and affectionate breed. Extremely handler focused
when handled by squirrels dipped in peanut butter. To all other handlers this breed
continually flips the dewclaw. This breed is a large dog in a small dog's body and this is
evident in the larger than life personality. Although small in stature this breed is terminally
dominant. This breed does best in a home where he can be treated as a human and sleep
with his head on a pillow. It is extremely dangerous to attempt to tell this breed they are
not human.
