The Donkey's Story
We acquired our first donkey, Charlie, in 2005 one week before I was due with William. It was quite
the undertaking for a massively pregnant person.I stopped on my way for a bathroom break and
Charlie filled the town with his resounding "HEEEEE-HAWWWWWS". We purchased him as a
guardian for our pygmy goats. We quickly fell in love with the sensitive, quite nature of the donkey.
They are so sincere and humble with a personality very unlike any equine I'd worked with before.

In 2006 we acquired Danny from a Pony Club family. He is the quitest, sweetest beast! He is quite
obliging to our many tortures, including "pony rides" for wee William. It seems that Will's first "horse"
isn't a horse at all!

Our donkeys also have a wonderful sense of humour. They love to wrestle each other to their knees,
fighting like wild mustang stallions before tearing off at a choppy gallop through the field. They will
play tug of war for hours with feed tubs or old rags. It is hilarious to see them play like dogs. When
they get bored of that they will let themselves out of their pen, wander over to the neighbours for a
visit, then find their way home and back into their pen again.

They are great watchdogs who let out a "hee-haw" whenever something is going on in the yard, such
as someone coming to the door, or a vehicle driving in the yard. They are better than the dogs!! They
also like to hee-haw in the morning and early evening at feeding times. I like to call them our
"Roosters...but much less scary".

The donkey's next big job in life is to act as guardians to our show Nubians. We hope they do a good
job!
