Where Quality Counts
Feed Our horses are fed high quality grass hay during the winter months. During the summer months their diet is comprised solely of pasture grasses. We monitor body condition closely and tweak our feeding program as needed. Senior horses are supplemented with a specially formulated Senior Horse complete feed during winter months. All horses are fed free choice Equest mineral blocks and clean, fresh water.
Pasture and Housing Our horses live outdoors year round in a pipe-fenced pasture. Three sided shelters and thick forests protect them from the elements.
Social Groups Our horses live in a large social group which allows them the necessary social contact for their mental wellbeing. We monitor herd hierarchy closely to ensure nobody is being bullied or picked on. Since we have changed our management over to exclusively geldings we have had minimal problems with herd dynamics. The boys are all pretty mellow and get along quite well once the pecking order has been established. Adequate shelter and feeder space helps eliminate the need for fighting.
Preventative Health Care We follow a preventative health care program with our horses. We vaccinate in April with a 4-way vaccine for Tetanus, West Nile Virus, EEE and VEE. We also vaccinate our show/competition horses for Influenza. Later in the summer we vaccinate for Potomac horse fever. We deworm four times per year using an oral product as recommended by our veterinarian. We utilize bug spray to minimize insect bite problems. Teeth are floated annually in the spring. We clean sheaths in the spring and fall, and more often if needed. Regular grooming improves circulation and prevents skin and coat problems.
Hoof Care We have a farrier trim our horse's feet every 6 weeks. We prefer to run our horses barefoot unless absolutely necessary.
Biosecurity There is a biosecurity program in place on at Ravenwood Ranch to minimize the disease risk to our animals. If you are interested in coming out to view our animals please contact us to set up an appointment and learn more about our biosecurity requirements.
